Bill apologized for stepping on any toes but has had a confusing week trying to get the cleaners and workers organized to work on the Glide. The final result of many phone calls is to watch your email messages for word from your Masters on when your team can work on the boat. Bill doesn’t want any time slots empty or teams doubled up on a time slot.
Beth also emailed Bill about the oarlocks. They are pretty loose even with sleeves. Donn Wilson designed them and we’re going to let him look at them. The oars have changed since they were installed. Bill Boerner liked the Turks head on No 1. Bill McGaw said the Turks head is nice looking but not functional.
Dale Fowler was asked about the new sculpture at the Harbor Master’s Building and said he has gotten a good response from people viewing it. Dale said the sculpture changes with the light. There are pictures of Annie Curtis, a sun, a moon, and other cut outs on the sculpture. It rests on what the port calls the esplanade not just a sidewalk.
Dale commented that Beth’s presentation to the advisory meeting a couple weeks ago had been very good. He is happy to see the enthusiasm and support for the small boat program.
Lyndon is happy about the way things are moving too and looking forward to finishing the grant application May 1st.
Von Kuehn updated us on the individual person boat use work that the committee has been doing. Their work concerns small boat saftey,
Michele had a picture of a gribble, that Dave said last week were eating the Enchantress. They love eating wood and are about 2 cm in size. They are also responsible for the problems on the Seattle waterfront and with the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
Michele passed around the hand outs she had for Waterfront festival for the clubs approval. She has done a very nice job for us that should be well received by the general public.
Lyndon attended the Chamber planing meeting also. They are hoping to see individual members display small boats—not for sale. Call Lyndon by May 1st. The Festival is the 17th.
Bill Testerman was passed a sheet by Carlann about when her team could work. This is what Bill would like from all the teams. Bill thinks the work might be done by the end of June.
Bev Larson has recovered and was present at the meeting and was asked what kind of surgery she had had done on her Cadillac.
Michele spoke up and recommended Beach Watchers training to anyone interested. Several of us have the training and it is worth while.
Bill Boerner said there would be an all day class tomorrow at the Senior Center starting at 8am. It is mandatory for 12-20 year olds, good for everyone else who want to be on the water.
Bill closed the meeting with a ‘CHOW’ at 8am and let everyone talk.
Respectfully submitted,
Jean Nelson, Secretary
Good morning was wished to everyone by Beth. Minutes read and approved. Treasurer had no change in her report from last week.

Our oarlock problems continue. Beth did not check out the oarlock because—due to the weather, they didn’t row. Bill put some red hoses on the oarlocks and they work but they pop off too. It is still a work in progress.
Boshie spoke about the work to be done on the boats. She is far to busy and not physically able to do it right now—She will call on the FLRTS to clean the boat up and get it ready for painting. That would be their contribution to the job. She will contact Shirley.
Bill Testerman saw a new sculpture put up yesterday near the Harbor Masters building on the promenade. It’s worth going to see.
Dave Jackson had his annual coast guard inspection on the Elizabeth Boneventure and got signed off until next year. The Rescue is moved to Andy Steward’s shop, Emerald Marine Carpentry. We’ll have a work party there next Tuesday night at 7PM. Thursday night Frank Orr, Dave and others will be playing at the Chamber of Commerce After Hours.
Boshie went to the Chamber meeting Thursday and told us about the plans for the Waterfront Festival. There will be 11 or 12 educational groups doing exhibits. They wondered if we could bring in a boat for exhibit. She could see a banner and signage and perhaps membership interest sign up and brochures. We cannot sell anything. Maybe we could take in the Rescue. It is looking very nice.
Bill said the cataract surgery for Bev went very well.
Dave presented a bill for work on the Rescue, $141.96; total funds spent $211. This was already approved.
Jack Barnard asked about the man overboard drill that we do. Dave felt we should have a buoy with a line tied to it thrown out and circle around and pick them up. Communication and having everyone on the same page is important when doing a man overboard exercise.
The white buoy that marks the sunken ship was discussed. And at one-foot tide, it would be easy to strike.
The Enchantress is being eaten actively by gribbles. Gribbles are a salt water bug.
Bill Testerman asked about the half-mast flags. They are for a service man killed in the wars from the state of Washington.
Boshie said at the Cap Sante Advisory Committee meeting, the small boat group was asked what their mission was. When told, the committee decided to write a letter stating that they are in support of the small boat groups objectives.
Beth said “It is Friday—Have a great weekend—Don’t throw any snowballs’—and the meeting ended.

Donn and Boshie have gone out to check the Glide and try to figure out the supplies needed for the repair. He emailed the list last night to Beth.
Several people have commented about problems with no 3 oar in the Annie C. Donn thinks that the oar is a slightly smaller in diameter and he thinks the problem is with the oarlock. Beth will check it next week.
Beth wants to stress that every crew needs to send people in to work on the boats and to get this maintenance done on the boats rather than stringing it out—She wants two work parties from each crew out there working—and she thanked us in advance.
Bill McGaw stated that the fenders are in place. A thank you for Bill was expressed.
Carlann was asked how she could get such good prices on marine hardware. She is an agent for Guemes Marine and has a port supply card. They are a wholesaler.
Beth reported that she had given her power point presentation to the Marine Advisory Committee yesterday. Dale had been the fill in Chair of the meeting and the committee had been in full support of what she said—which was a FIRST.
Michele is working on putting out brochures for the Waterfront Festival. Bev is going to get an email from her regarding scheduling.
New Business
Rudy will be the Master taking out the boat this morning and asked about the crew and if he met them down at the water—several of them were at the meeting. Today should be a nice day for a row.
Meeting was adjourned.

Michelle gave us an update on the Waterfront festival plans. The planners would like all booths to be manned. The space is 30 ‘ by 60’. The venders who are going to be there are people like SVC and Wolf Hollow and Anacortes Community Maritime Center. Do we want the advertising? The question is-Can we do this? Do we want to bring in new members? It was agreed after some discussion that we should proceed. There is a meeting on Thursday the 17th at 9:30 am at the Bank of the Pacific for interested parties. Michelle can’t make it because of a class commitment.
Rudy asked what the possibility was of getting another boat? Beth said we have three—and would go to David for a report on boat maintenance.
David wanted to thank the crews for doing all that painting last year. He has looked at the Glide and it has a split starboard garboard, which was indicative of an older boat but can be cleaned and repaired. The work on the Rescue is coming along great and he needs a place to do the painting. He also wanted to talk about the train house. Are we interested? We may have to relocate it and install wiring and plumbing. It is 20’by 40’ and would be a nice building for OARS to own. He feels that $5000.00 would be a good offer—or $200-$300 a month. Beth suggested that we share the space with ACMC. Bill moved that we go with the Tommy Thompson building and solve the other problems as they come up. It was seconded and passed.
Bill will get the fenders replaced this weekend and hang the other fenders in the shed.
Donn and Boshie will go out tomorrow and look at the Glide and try figuring out what to use and get the repair and repainting going on her. Beth questioned if the weather was warm enough to start repairs.
She asked Torgy if he would be open to heading up a grommet making party. Torgy’s answer was a yes and he has already looked at all the grommets and he’s looking at buying some manila to train people with. He prefers 13-mm. hemp for grommets. With larger tholepins and heavier leathers the dynamics have changed and some of the grommets are too small.
New Business
Carlann told us that she could get any new supplies we need at good prices—talk to her.
Beth extended a big thank you to the FLRTS for a wonderful potluck. Friday night’s dinner was most enjoyable and the program was excellent.
There will be music tonight by David and Frank at the Keystone building for the first of April Art Walk.
Meeting adjourned.

Carlann also had a thank you from the Vancouver Club for $650.00 that we sent for the rebuilding of their rowing program and tax receipt from them for us to use.
She was asked if we were getting interest on anything and she said—Not right now.

Michele made a report on OARS prospective part in the Waterfront Festival. After talking to the people in charge of planning the festival, it was decided to have just a display table with information and pictures about the club. There isn’t room in the water for us to be rowing around and it’s too much work to haul boats out of the water and clean them up for display. Michele and Boshie are going to have our banner remade and have a table reserved for us in the big tent. They’re going to have a brochure about OARS made also.
Bill McGaw said he was able to order six new fenders for the boats, three blues and three white, single eyelets.
Potluck is tonight at 6pm at the FYC. Bring your own table service and a dish to share and there will be people helping you to park.
Meeting adjourned.

March 21st 22 present
Meeting called to order by Beth Bell.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
The Weggs have found a paddle for the club and are in the process of putting their house up for sale.
T. K talked about the Waterfront Festival being a REAL water front festival this year. They have gotten rid of all the ‘Junk’ displays. The emphasis will be on waterfront activities. He thinks it would be to our advantage or possibly disadvantage to have some participation in it. T.K. was asked by the Waterfront committee to visit all the boat builders in the area and get pictures and samples. He thinks that we are a prime part of the waterfront and the history and it would be to our advantage to take a bigger part in the festival this year. There is going to be a model boat sailing regatta that day. He’s hoping for a lot of wind.
Lyndon agreed that we should participate in the Waterfront Festival. They hope to provide a small area for people to show any small boats they have built. ACMC and Emerald Marine hope to show 3-5 boats. No for sale signs please.
TK said we would have all of the Seafarers park area to put small boats out and have all that water area. Beth suggested having our boats in the water and offering rows all day. Boshie suggested our ‘drill teams’, kinda like the ‘Rocketts’, to show off our rowing. She thinks our boats are too small to have novices in them without several good, experienced rowers.
Bill Boerner asked if the walkway in front of the marina would be back in time for the festival. He was assured that it would be done.
Boshie and Michele volunteered to head a group to decide what we want to do and how we’re going to do it and get all these plans going for the Waterfront Festival the 17th and 18th of May, the third weekend. We will not have the Elizabeth Boneventure that weekend.
Lyndon give a report on the small boat center. He stated that Feasibility and Steering committees are getting together in April to review their progress and also to look for guidance in the future. Annette Middleton might do a conceptual design for them Beth would like Cynthia Richardson to volunteer to do some pro bone work on the boathouse.
Boshie said if anyone did not see Beth’s presentation to the port commissioners, it was excellent. Beth Bell, John Pope, and Pat Barrett, who is in charge of the small boat fund raising effort, have been invited to make a presentation to the Marine Advisory Committee meeting the second Tuesday of the month, April 10th at 5pm at the port offices. She indicated that the public is welcome to these meetings.
Jim Laurel has a concern about damage being done to the boats to the floor boards on the side and he has traced it to the fenders having a loose eyelet that is hard and the rhythmic rowing has worn the floor boards down. His conclusion is that we need some 5-inch fenders with only one eyelet. Someone suggested having Torgy macramé over the rough end. Or use rope fenders. We have research to do. Bill is taking on the job of finding three plastic fenders per boat.
Permission was given to take the Annie C out to row this morning.
Lyndon at the Maritime Center has a number of good classes. They start March 24th and people can register as late as April 4th. They are:
1. Understanding and Maintaining Marine Diesel Engines
2. Navigation Art and Science
3. Introduction to Traditional Small Wooden Boat & How to Build Them
4. Renovation of a Traditional Wooden Skiff
5. Build a 14 ft Rowing PEAPOD
6. Basic 12 Volt Electricity & What Boaters Need to Know
There is some charge for every class and please email Lyndon at anacortesmaritimectr@msn.com or call 299-9075.
Chuck has the Tholepin out and he gave Rudy most of the credit. It has gone out by email and most people will have it by mail soon also.
TK said there is a new yacht club in town and they are meeting the 10th of April at the Brown Lantern. Those interested in controlled small sail boats are invited.
Friday at 6pm is the potluck for OARS at the Fidalgo Bay Yacht Club. Bob Elsner from the port is coming and will present the program. Please attend.
The Trawler Fest is coming up May 19-23, Memorial week, with 300 plus boats. Be aware and be careful.
Meeting Adjourned,
