The Rescue was built for a Georgia lawyer in 1991, but is now back home in Anacortes and put into service on a seasonal basis. It is an 18-foot sliding seat single available for use by qualified OARS masters.
The Rescue was built in Anacortes in 1991 by Freya Boatworks, which was headed up by OARS Honorary Member David Jackson. The Rescue and its sister ship Bess, which came first in 1984, are Queen’s Gigs designed by famed marine architect Bill Gardner.
Atlanta lawyer George Hart saw a picture of the Bess on the cover of a Delta Airlines in-flight magazine, did some sleuthing, called David and said he wanted one just like it. Boatbuilding began and soon the Rescue was crated and shipped to Georgia.
About 14 years later word got back to David that the Rescue wasn’t getting rowed anymore and might be better used by a nonprofit. That led to the Rescue coming home and the restoration work needed to get her back on the water and part of the OARS fleet.
Trial rows are a great way to see if our rowing experience suits you — and learn what OARS is all about. Trial rows last about an hour, and you can go on up to three trial rows before making a membership decision. Many trial rows are Friday mornings, but they can be arranged any time. To sign up for a trial row, use our Contact form below.

Here's a guide to the available file formats.

Join and Copy Email Addresses to Clipboard
Do you want to easily copy and paste all these email addresses into your email app, all in one go? Use one of these buttons to do it.
But first, a small wrinkle: different email apps have different requirements for separating email addresses in the To: field. So it can matter which button you use to join and copy these email addresses.
Most email apps (like Apple Mail or Gmail) accept a comma to separate email addresses, like this:
If you're unsure which button to use, try using commas first.
Some email apps (like Microsoft Outlook) require a semicolon to separate email addresses, like this:
So, just use the button that's appropriate for your email app to join and copy these email addresses to your clipboard, and then paste the result into your email app's To: field.

Stop by the OARS booth during the 2023 Anacortes Waterfront Festival
Once again OARS will be showcase a beautiful wooden boat and connect with the community (and potential new members) at the Anacortes Waterfront Festival June 3-4 at Cap Sante Marina. It’s all part of our mission: Rowing together to enjoy, honor and promote wooden boats and small craft traditions.
This year we’ll have the Erica on display, with a new flier to help answer the most often asked questions. Do you know what wood was used to make the Erica’s oars? Volunteers will take the Erica to the Festival Friday and then put her back beneath the Preston Sunday after the festival ends.
Stop by the booth and see what else OARS is sharing – and thank the members who volunteered to take a two-hour shift. Maybe next year you’ll sign up to help tell our story and recruit new members.
